Title

Introduction to Mental Health Stigma

Overview

2. Anticipation Guide – what is mental health?

a. Information introduced on mental health

3. Exit Ticket

Goals

1. To start to understand the stigma that revolves around mental health and how that stigma may affect misconceptions about mental health

2. To develop an understanding what is true about mental health and what is false, before diving into reading and analyzing character’s with mental health

Standards

CCRA.R.1 Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it

Materials Needed

1. Phone or laptop to participate in poll everywhere for the anticipation guide

2. Skeleton notes for anticipation guide (true/false)

3. Notecard and pencil for exit ticket

Activity

1. Introduce topic and syllabus: Here the teacher will guide students through the schedule, making them aware of key dates for assignments, and the goals for the unit

2. Anticipation Guide: students will then participate in a Poll Everywhere, prompts students digitally with true or false questions on mental health. They will answer anonymously with their phones if the answer is true or false, then the answer will be revealed. Once it is revealed, they will circle the right answer on their sheet https://www.polleverywhere.com/multiple_choice_polls/vVU4JBx1eTkKzwZ1fa295

3. They will be asked the question “in your own words - from what you learned today, what is mental health?” and will write their answer on a notecard for an exit ticket

Accommodation

This lesson accommodates to everyone because it will be revealing the misconceptions and the knowledge the students know about mental health so that the goal of lessons in the future can be adapted based on the information provided in the class. Doing an assignment that is anonymous makes students who may have got the wrong answer not feel as bad about it, and gives them the opportunity to learn. Additionally, the notecards have them define mental health in their own words, making the meaning of the definition applicable

Extensions

The exit ticket will be a follow up to this lesson plan

Assessment

The exit ticket will assess where the students are at with the goals of the lesson plan by providing them to define what mental health is in their own words
