Goals
1. Students will be able to evaluate where the chapters in Speak are, using their narrative and come up with possible solutions for the character
2. Students will learn ways they can speak more positive about themselves

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.SL.3 Evaluate a speaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric.
Materials
1. Speak book
2. Notecard for exit ticket
3. Access to article
Activities
Students will first take about 5 minutes to write on a notecard the answer to "Are You Hard Or Easy On Yourself?" then can take about 2-3 minutes to share out loud or in groups with each other if there is time. Then the teacher will take about 15 minutes to read Speak (pgs. 20-30) aloud to the class. Then the teacher will pass around the article "Go Easy On Yourself" reading it aloud to the students for about 5 minutes with them following along, encouraged to make note of it. The teacher will then lead the class in discussion or groups can discuss with each other. The teacher can make up questions based on the students and the class, but here are some questions I would ask as a start for discussion:
- What is something negative you find yourself telling yourself a lot? How does it affect you?
- What would happen if you said something a little more positive to yourself each day?
- Is there any of the ways in the article you might try to go easier on yourself with?
Give an exit ticket in the last 3 minutes of class. Ask your students what are some ways Mel in Speak talk to herself, and what from the article could she use to help stop negative talk?
Accommodation
The students will be reading along and hearing the book. The teacher can also design discussion questions and groups if applicable to students who need more scaffolding
Extensions and Assessment
The exit ticket is a wrap up and assess where the students are
